This two-day skills workshop focuses on integrating knowledge and practical skills. It requires direct/live training to develop practical supervision skills that are relevant to all supervisee training pathways and to reflective supervision practice. The workshop is currently conducted via interactive videoconference. Successful completion of Part 1 is a prerequisite for attending this Part 2 workshop. A certificate of completion for Part 1 from an accredited training provider must be provided when enrolling in this workshop.
PART 2 (SKILLS WORKSHOP) CONTENT
The two-day Skills Workshop is conducted via videoconference and integrates theory and small group practice (successful completion of online course is prerequisite). The two-day workshop will further expand on the topics covered in the online component reviewing PsyBA supervision requirements. The workshop is interactive, including live demonstrations, small group activities, practice exercises and class discussion. Comprehensive readings are provided in addition to a Supervision Resource Handbook. Numbers are strictly limited for this workshop.
Workshop content:
- Setting up competency based clinical supervision
- The supervisory relationship
- Live demonstration (pre-supervisory meeting; contract setting and establishing learning goals)
- Small group practice exercises
- Reflective practice theory and practice
- Supervision interventions (using videos and tapes, assessment of skill acquisition)
- Micro-skills training, modelling and demonstrations
- Structural considerations (Skype, telehealth supervision)
- Techniques and methods including case consultation, writing activities, journal, log books, process recoding, and structured case review forms and live observation methods
- Supervision relationship issues (awareness and sensitivity to diversity)
- Dealing with difficulties in supervision
- Ethics and Professional Practice issues, including procedural dilemmas
- The role of self-evaluation
- Evaluating supervisee skills in accordance with AHPRA criteria.
WORKSHOP PRESENTER: Sam Vasta
Sam Vasta is an accredited PsyBA Supervisor Trainer and approved supervisor. For over 35 years he has worked in the community mental health sector as a frontline mental health clinician and in managerial roles where he has developed competencies in dealing with the variety of mental health disorders. In the adult mental health space this has included providing and coordinating care for people with a variety of disorders, including psychosis, mood disorders, personality disorders and trauma. Sam has extensive experience in providing supervision to staff working in public mental health, private psychology practice and community-managed organisations who provide direct clinical services and who are in managerial roles. Sam has a background in providing systemic, narrative and other evidence based models of supervision to practitioners, in addition to supporting team leaders/managers who work more broadly in their supervision of staff.
CERTIFICATION:
On successful completion of the two-day workshop participants will be issued a certificate of completion which needs to be submitted to the Board with the Application to apply for Board-approved supervisor status – ABAS-76 form (available from the Board’s website). This certificate needs to be submitted with Certificate 1 (online course) and Certificate 3 (Assessment of Competency). Once all three components are successfully completed participants will then receive 5 years accreditation as an approved supervisor.
