About the Workshop
Clinical Reflective Supervision for Nursing and Midwifery
Delivered via interactive videoconference (Zoom platform).
This workshop provides a frame for nurses and midwives to develop and enhance supervisory micro-skills of reflective practice supervision. A strengths-based approach will be used for establishing, maintaining and evaluating supervision. Along with the Gibbs model of reflective practice, supervisors will be introduced to the A-B-C Model© (Affective–Behavioural–Cognitive frame) that supports development of both reflective and reflexive skills.
Aims and Objectives
This workshop aims to provide a framework for conducting and evaluating reflective practice supervision within nursing and midwifery. It is suitable for those that are current supervisors wishing to refresh their skills in reflective and reflexive practice, and for those new to the role of supervision wanting to develop core reflective practice supervisory competencies. This workshop will provide a clear and structured framework for supervisors to foster and support practitioner clinical autonomy, accountability and self-care.
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
• Apply the Gibbs model of reflective practice within nursing and midwifery contexts
• Apply the A-B-C model© of reflective and reflexive practice as an adjunct to the Gibbs model for self-care
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor/supervisee in creating a safe and confidential space for reflective supervision
• Develop skills and confidence to support supervisee critical reflection and problem-solving
• Demonstrate a variety of reflective practice strategies and questioning techniques
• Integrate reflective strategies to support the restorative function of supervision.
Workshop structure and activities
• Reflective practice supervision: what is it and how is it done in practice?
• Purpose and function of clinical supervision
• Individual reflective supervision – developing best practice models
• Mindfulness based resilience as a reflective supervision intervention – how to integrate in practice as a way to manage workplace stress
• Considering trauma-informed principles within the reflection process as an intervention for self-care
• Overview and practice of the Gibbs model of reflective practice.
Participants will have opportunities to discuss and consider how to apply the Gibbs model of practice for their workplace and have opportunities to engage in reflective practice supervision exercises across the day. The workshop will provide opportunities to view live demonstrations and videos and engage in small group learning activities.
