ABOUT THE SUPERVISOR FULL TRAINING PACKAGE
 

Psychologists wanting to become PsyBA approved supervisors need to complete Supervisor Full Training, consisting of three components completed in sequence (Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3). Once all three components are successfully completed, participants can apply for supervisor accreditation effective for 5 years. Participants are advised to consult the PsyBA Supervisor Training requirements prior to enrolling.

Supervisor Full Training consists of:

• Part 1: Online Knowledge assessment. Part 1 requires 8-10 hours of self-directed preparatory work relating to knowledge of best-practice supervision and knowledge of relevant Board codes, guidelines and policies.
  The Online Knowledge Assessment is accessed via secure login on the CSS website. The course includes reading relevant material provided online, completing self-directed learning tasks, reflection of practice and a multiple choice assessment test. Completion of Part 1 requires passing the online assessment with a minimum 80% pass grade. Part 1 must be completed BEFORE Part 2.
   
• Part 2: Skills training workshop. Part 2 is a two-day skills workshop focusing on integrating knowledge and practical skills. It requires direct/live training to develop practical supervision skills that are relevant to all supervisee training pathways and to reflective supervision practice. The workshop is currently conducted via interactive videoconference. Successful completion of Part 1 is a prerequisite for attending Part 2.
   
• Part 3: Competency-based assessment and evaluation. In Part 3, participants are required to submit an electronic recording of a supervision session and a written reflection of the session. The training provider will systematically assess your demonstration of supervisor competencies and provide a pass or fail grade and feedback. You have six (6) months from the time you have completed Part 2 (2-day workshop) to submit your Part 3 task.
   

PART 1 (ONLINE KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT) CONTENT

This online learning provides psychologists with the fundamental knowledge required for competency-based supervision covering the required knowledge to be an approved supervisor of psychologists. The course provides information on the PsyBA supervision guidelines for registration and endorsement and includes information, readings, videos and links to relevant PsyBA registration guidelines and standards.

By completing Part 1 of the PsyBA supervisor training you will:

1. Have sound knowledge of the role of clinical supervision in psychology
2. Be aware of the different models of supervision
3. Be introduced to the role of the initial meeting between supervisor and supervisee in which the purpose of the supervision is jointly defined
4. Have knowledge of contract setting in supervision and of determining supervisee learning needs within a competency based framework
5. Be introduced to various techniques of best practice and evidence-based supervision
6. Have knowledge of the PsyBA pathways and supervisory requirements, including National Psychology Exam and legal and ethical aspects of supervision.

PART 2 (SKILLS WORKSHOP) CONTENT
 

The two-day Skills Workshop is conducted via videoconference and integrates theory and small group practice (successful completion of online course is prerequisite). The two-day workshop will further expand on the topics covered in the online component reviewing PsyBA supervision requirements. The workshop is interactive, including live demonstrations, small group activities, practice exercises and class discussion. Comprehensive readings are provided in addition to a Supervision Resource Handbook. Numbers are strictly limited for this workshop.

Workshop content:

• Setting up competency based clinical supervision
• The supervisory relationship
• Live demonstration (pre-supervisory meeting; contract setting and establishing learning goals)
• Small group practice exercises
• Reflective practice theory and practice
• Supervision interventions (using videos and tapes, assessment of skill acquisition)
• Micro-skills training, modelling and demonstrations
• Structural considerations (Skype, telehealth supervision)
• Techniques and methods including case consultation, writing activities, journal, log books, process recoding, and structured case review forms and live observation methods
• Supervision relationship issues (awareness and sensitivity to diversity)
• Dealing with difficulties in supervision
• Ethics and Professional Practice issues, including procedural dilemmas
• The role of self-evaluation
• Evaluating supervisee skills in accordance with AHPRA criteria.
   

WORKSHOP PRESENTER: Christine Senediak

Christine Senediak is a Board Approved supervisor trainer with 40 years clinical experience and over 35 years experience as a supervisor and educator. She supervises widely providing individual, peer, group and organisational supervision to psychiatrists, psychologists and other health clinicians working in child, adolescent and family services, schools, adult mental health, drug health, gambling, sexual assault, cross-cultural and trauma services. She divides her time between education, clinical work and supervision. Christine has trained as a systemic family therapist, which influences her approach to clinical supervision where the wider context is considered in understanding the development and maintenance of problems in clinical practice. She employs a reflective practice approach to supervision, enhancing self-awareness of relational issues between therapist, client and systems. Christine incorporates elements of systemic, cognitive behavioural, mindfulness and person-centred therapies in supervision and training.

PART 3: COMPETENCY-BASED ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

On completion of Part 1 and Part 2, in Part 3 participants are required to submit an electronic recording of a supervision session and a written reflection of the session. The training provider will systematically assess your demonstration of supervisor competencies and provide a pass or fail grade and feedback. A confidential feedback report is provided to the participant regarding the supervision session.  Further details of this task are provided to participants on enrolment. 
You have six (6) months from the time you have completed Part 2 (2-day workshop) to submit your Part 3 task.

 

CERTIFICATION:

On successful completion of the two-day workshop, participants will be issued a certificate of completion which needs to be submitted to the Board with the Application to apply for Board-approved supervisor status – ABAS-76 form (available from the Board’s website). This certificate needs to be submitted with Certificate 1 (online course) and Certificate 3 (Assessment of Competency).  Once all three components are successfully completed, participants will then receive 5 years accreditation as an approved supervisor.
