ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

This 2-day practical skills-based workshop covers the core concepts and techniques of family therapy practice across the lifespan. You will learn key skills in family work in addition to family therapy concepts and systemic thinking. The emphasis will be on applying contemporary theory as systemic practice, through teaching, demonstration, video and case vignettes, group discussion and small group exercises. Day One provides and an overview of the major schools of family therapy and their influences on contemporary practice. Key concepts including using genograms, assessment tools and the use of systemic hypothesising in assessment will be discussed with opportunities to apply these skills in practice via video and practical activities. Day Two will provide opportunities to develop questioning and intervention skills. Conducted face to face in Singapore.

Suitable for: Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Family Case Managers, Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol Practitioners, School Counsellors and health workers engaged with families in treatment.

  • Understanding family of origin and multigenerational patterns
  • Working with the influence of family relationships, stories, rules and patterns
  • Use of genograms as a family assessment tool
  • Overview of the models of family therapy- the 'best bits' and how to apply in practice
  • The first family interview for assessment and treatment
  • Systemic formulation and treatment planning
  • Individual vs family therapy - when to do what 
  • Integrating family therapy as an evidence-based practice
  • Maximizing opportunities for change in therapy
  • Trouble shooting in family therapy - working with reluctant clients and challenging presentations.

     
CERTIFICATION:

Participants are required to attend both days and will receive a certificate of attendance for 14 hours of training.

PRESENTER: Christine Senediak


Christine Senediak is a Board Approved supervisor trainer with 40 years clinical experience and over 35 years experience as a supervisor and educator. She supervises widely providing individual, peer, group and organisational supervision to psychiatrists, psychologists and other health clinicians working in child, adolescent and family services, schools, adult mental health, drug health, gambling, sexual assault, cross cultural and trauma services. She divides her time between education, clinical work and supervision. Christine has trained as a systemic family therapist, which influences her approach to clinical supervision where the wider context is considered in understanding the development and maintenance of problems in clinical practice. She employs a reflective practice approach to supervision enhancing self awareness of relational issues between therapist, client and systems. Christine incorporates elements of systemic, cognitive behavioural, mindfulness and person centred therapies in supervision and training.
