ABOUT THE COURSE:
Successful completion of this course provides participants with the Certificate of Supervisor Accreditation. This PACFA accredited training allows participants to apply to PACFA for accreditation as a PACFA Accredited Supervisor. Applicants must contact PACFA directly regarding accreditation criteria.
The aim of this course is to provide a framework for conducting and evaluating effective clinical supervision using a competency based framework incorporating reflective practice. Participants will develop the necessary skills for setting up a rewarding clinical supervision relationship to enhance supervisee learning and skill development, considering the systemic issues of their workplace/team and client group.
How the course is structured:
Part 1: E-Supervision workbook with self-assessment and learning tasks
Part 2: 2 day interactive skills based workshop (face to face)
Part 3: Assessment of competency (conducting a supervision session – live feedback and report
Part 4: Videoconference supervision sessions
Part 1: Supervision e-Workbook
Prior to attending the 2-day workshop participants are provided with a Supervision e-Workbook covering core preparatory readings, learning resources, links to clinical supervision training videos and podcast lectures. As a participant of the Accredited Clinical Supervisor course you will be expected to work through and complete all learning and the self-assessment tasks. This workbook is an invaluable guide that covers how to set up, conduct and evaluate effective supervision. Topics covered in the E-workbook include:

Chapter 2: Models of Clinical Supervision
Chapter 3: Preparing for Supervision
Chapter 4: Methods and Techniques
Chapter 5: Reflective Practice
Chapter 6: Ethical Issues
Chapter 7: Evaluation and feedback.
Part 2: 2 day workshop (4-5 March 2024) - Sydney
At the completion of the workshop, participants should be able to:
- understand the key concepts involved in setting up and maintaining a collaborative clinical supervision relationship, using evidence based practice and considering professional practice and workplace guidelines
- have a well-defined theoretical understanding from which to base clinical supervision practice
- identify the roles and responsibilities within a clinical supervision framework, including consideration of the ethical and legal parameters of clinical practice
- discuss prospective supervisor’s and supervisee’s knowledge and understanding of the supervisory process
- be able to identify the supervisee’s strengths and needs for supervision
- demonstrate and provide information on how to structure individual, peer and group supervision sessions
- explore and provide a framework on how to give feedback regarding clinical practice and case management
- learn how to deal with ‘crises’ and stressful situations which may arise for the supervisee in regards to their clinical practice
- identify and provide information on how to evaluate supervision sessions and maximise supervisee professional development
- develop skills to balance both administrative and clinical responsibilities.
Part 3: Assessment of Supervisor Competency Skills (6 March 2024) - Sydney
Each student will rotate through 3 three positions; Supervisor, Supervisee and Observer. Each position is to be completed over a 60-minute period. All students are to bring real and relevant issues for supervision to the workshop.
Goals of competency evaluation:
- Demonstrate supervision skills and knowledge
- Provide an opportunity to reflect of what you have learnt and how you will put knowledge and skills in practice
- This is an assessment task to evaluate your ability to conduct a supervision session, provide effective feedback and use relevant tools facilitating a competency based reflective supervision session.
Part 4: Videoconference supervision sessions
4 x 3 hour videoconference supervision sessions are provided.
The course is endorsed by ACMHN, endorsed by ACA as an Accredited Training Course in Supervision and endorsed by PACFA to meet the requirements of PACFA’s Supervision Training Standards.
Certificate of Completion
On successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a Certificate of Supervisor Accreditation.
PRESENTER: Sam Vasta BA, B Soc Studies, M Arts (Counselling)
Sam Vasta has worked in public community mental health services for over 35 years as a senior clinician and Service Manager. He holds both Social Worker and Counselling Psychologist degrees and has a wealth of clinical experience and supervision practice in a range of service settings. These range from specialist services for young people experiencing mental health problems to clients experiencing enduring mental illness, as well as drug and alcohol issues, complex trauma and cross-cultural problems. As a Service Manager, Sam supervises health practitioners and team leaders, often involving complex clinical scenarios and risk presentations, in addition to supporting and debriefing staff following critical incidents. Sam is a PsyBA Accredited Supervisor trainer for psychologists and provides accredited supervisor training for PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) and ACA (Australian Counselling Association). He lectures across Australia and Singapore and provides in-house supervisor training for mental health and allied health staff.
Currently, Sam also provides individual and group supervision to a range of practitioners across various government, NGO and private sector settings. Given his background and extensive experience, he also offers consultation, supervision and mentoring to Team Leaders and Managers to support them to survive and grow in challenging leadership positions.
This ACA accredited course covers information on how to establish, maintain and evaluate clinical supervision sessions, establish learning goals for supervisees and work cooperatively and efficiently within the context of practice that they supervise. The course is suitable for health workers including nurses, social workers, counsellors, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and others such as those working in welfare and drug & alcohol services. ...
*WORKSHOP FULL* This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to critically examine the practice of competency-based supervision using a trauma informed practice lens. Supervision approaches to help prevent vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burn out will be discussed, with the view to help supervisors supervisors strengthen their ability to support practitioners integrate self-care strategies in their practice. ...
