PsyBA Master Class: Professional Practice & Ethical Issues 29 April 2021 WORKSHOP FULL

This workshop is a PsyBA approved Master Class, offered via distance education (one-day interactive videoconference session). The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of a number of ethical and legal issues relevant to supervisors and supervisees, including confidentiality, dual relationships, direct and vicarious liability, duty to warn and informed consent and the related challenges of ethical decision making. In addition, the workshop will discuss ways to identify and manage issues that may arise in the supervisory relationship and deal with difficulties that can occur in supervision, including feedback, evaluation and managing underperforming supervisees. Pre-reading resources are provided, including revision documents of competency based supervision to ensure participants are familiar with the Board requirements.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will:

•Understand core competencies of ethical practice in supervision

•Understand the multiple roles of the supervisor

•Have a solid understanding of professional boundaries and issues of confidentiality as related to professional practice issues in competency based supervision

•Have a solid understanding and be able to apply professional standards of practice in all aspects of supervision provision

•Understand ethical decision making in clinical and supervisory contexts

•Be aware of legal responsibility and related decision making regarding ethical issues andclinical competence, and personal functioning

•Be competent to apply ethical decision making regarding gatekeeping, monitoring andevaluation across all pathways

•Be aware of and competent to manage challenging issues that may arise in the different contexts of supervision

•Be able to identify and manage challenging supervisory relationships and difficulties

•Be able to give difficult feedback and evaluation to supervisees

•Be able to manage other challenging contexts of supervision (e.g. incompetent supervisee; role conflict, gender and religious issues).

•Small group and class discussions of managing ethical dilemmas in clinical practice and supervision.

Presenter: Christine Senediak

About the Presenter:

Christine Senediak is a Board Approved supervisor trainer with 35 years clinical experience and over 30 years experience as a supervisor and educator. She supervises widely providing individual, peer, group and organisational supervision to psychatrists, psychologists and other health clinicians working in child, adolescent and family services, schools, adult mental health, drug health, gambling, sexual assault, cross cultural and trauma services. She divides her time between education, clinical work and supervision. Christine has trained as a systemic family therapist, which influences her approach to clinical supervision where the wider context is considered in understanding the development and maintenance of problems in clinical practice. She employs a reflective practice approach to supervision enhancing self awareness of relational issues between therapist, client and systems. Christine incorporates elements of systemic, cognitive behavioural, mindfulness and person centered therapies in supervision and training.

Workshop Delivery: This Master Class is offered via distance education as an interactive videoconference session. Numbers are strictly limited to 15 for this Master Class.

Date: 29 April 2021
Time: 9.00am-4.30pm

Participants are required to attend both sessions, receiving a certificate of attendance for 7 hours of face to face training recognised as an AHPRA approved Master Class. A short reflective exercise is used to assess knowledge and understanding of the topic at the end of the day.  The workshop is equivalent to 7 CPD hours. This workshop is interactive and allows for ample time to practice and review the application of reflective practice in supervision.
